The new 5000 kwanza banknote was originally planned to be issued in January, and the National Bank of Angola (BNA) decided to issue it on February 4 as a tribute to the Angolan national hero.This is the fifth new version of the banknotes issued by BNA from July 2020.

Previously, the BNA's gradual issuance of new banknotes in 2020 is: 200 kwanza denominations in July, 500 kwanzas denominations in September, 1,000 kwanzas denominations and 2,000 kwanzas denominations in October.
The 2020 version of the new banknotes, except for the 5000 kwanza denominations issued this time, continue to maintain tissue paper, and the 200-2000 kwanzas denominations are all polymer (plastic) substrates.
